Mossman Gorge – Monday Afternoon

I recently received a call from the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize to let me know I’m a 2011 finalist. I was completely unprepared for the announcement and my heart felt like it was going to burst from my chest! Needless to say I’m pretty excited and exceptionally proud of myself.
‘Mossman Gorge – Monday afternoon’ was made whilst on holiday with my wife Emma. The diffused light through the canopy was stunning, the water icy & the air warm. Previous to our afternoon at the gorge, I had been reading a Tim Winton novel called Land’s Edge. His words to me created an honest, familiar Australian landscape brimming with texture & life. This along with other recent influences motivated me to re-consider my approach to making pictures. I felt compelled to take a step back and embrace more of the environment in order to broaden the context of my work. As we were leaving the gorge with camera in hand I turned around to take one last look at this peaceful, harmonious & magical place.
This is what I saw at Mossman Gorge, Monday afternoon.
The Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize was set in motion in 2007 by the Moran Arts Foundation. This Prize is exhibited at the same time as the Portrait Prize and consists of three sections; Open, Secondary Schools and Primary Schools. Entrants are asked to interpret ‘Contemporary life in Australia’, with an emphasis on Australian’s going about their day-to-day lives. An exhibition of the finalists is held each year at the State Library of NSW following a touring exhibition around Australia. There is a total prize pool of A$130,000, with $100,000 awarded to the winner of the Open division and up to $10,000 awarded for highly commended works.
